SEN-CIT: The sensitization of citizens in the field of immigrants' and refugees’ inclusion to the hosting society (Exchange of good practices in adult education)

LTT -  Cyprus 2nd to 4th of April 2019, 

«SENSIT» partners (SBICO-Poland, VORMINGPLUS LIMBURG-Belgium, Hypatia-Cyprus) met in Cyprus 2nd to 4th of April 2019, to identify good practices that are being implemented at local level, with the aim of adopting or exchanging some of them, for the above Erasmus+ project, concerning the integration of refugees.
Hypatia, Foundation Promoting Equality in Cyprus, hosted SBICO and VORMINGPLUS LIMBURG from 2nd to 4th of April, within «SENSIT» project. That was the 1st of the transnational meeting between the partners of SENCIT project (Erasmus+ program). The project is about finding and adopting good practises for refugees social inclusion.

The partners made educational visits to KISA, HOPE FOR CHILDREN, CYPRUS REFUGEE COUNCIL and MUNICIPAL MULTICULTURAL CENTRE in Nicosia.

KISA made a presentation of their actions and vision which is the promotion of an all-inclusive, multicultural society, free of racism, xenophobia. They showed who they are focusing on the fields of Migration, Asylum, Racism, Discrimination and Trafficking, and it includes awareness-raising of the Cypriot society as well as lobbying in order to influence the legal and structural framework, the policies and practices in these fields. They showed how they operate a Migrant and Refugee Centre that provides free information, support, advocacy and mediation services to migrants, refugees, victims of trafficking and racism / discrimination and ethnic minorities.

HOPE FOR CHILDREN gave us their address the last minute since the location should be protected, since the program they presented to us is about unaccompanied minors. They told us how they aim to bring together judges, lawyers, psychologists, medical practitioners, mediators, counselors, mental health workers, media representatives, child cares, teachers & allied professionals to contribute their specialized expertise in a practical manner through education, legal and other advocacy to promote and protect the interests of the children living in the building.

CYPRUS REFUGEE COUNCIL presented how they advocate for the establishment and implementation of positive legislation, policies and practices, in accordance with International and European Law. At the community level, they showed us how they pursue the empowerment as well as their mobilisation, and meaningful participation in all aspects of society. So they conduct trainings, workshops, seminars and other capacity building activities to persons of concern, other NGOs and professionals in the field, volunteers and members of local communities, authorities and policy makers. They also told us how they provide individualized legal, social and psychological support to persons of concern with the aim to ensure access to rights, integration into the local communities and a satisfactory quality of life. Furthermore, they network with relevant civil society actors, educational institutions and media.

MUNICIPAL MULTICULTURAL CENTRE presented to us, how, as an Intercultural Centre operates under the Municipality of Nicosia. They offer Greek Language, English Language and IT Courses for migrants living in Nicosia. They also provide a welcoming training area where members develop both their linguistic and e-skills to support their adaptation and integration into Cypriot society. It is the place where refugees can meet people, get oriented, and feel more at home in Cyprus.

The partners also made a two-day conference in Larnaca as for writing down all the information received in order to submit them in the project, in order to help refugees in all three countries involved. Next step settled is transnational meetings in Belgium and Poland, in where the partners will show their countries good practices on refugees, as for the other partners can adopt.

On 16 June 2019, in Świętokrzyskie Park in the centre of Warsaw, the 5th Warsaw Diversity Days festival was held under the honorary patronage of the Ombudsman. It was the final of a week-long event related to multiculturalism and tolerance (workshops, debates, city games, film screenings, exhibitions etc.).

Vormingplus Limburg organizes all kind of activities in the free time of people. They want to make a social difference with their activities. That’s why they participate in an Erasmus+ project. In the week October 8-10 2019 organizations from Poland and Cyprus visited Vormingplus. Together they want to stimulate innovation and exchange good practices.

Many organizations in Flemish adult education are active in all kinds of European projects, including through the ERASMUS + actions. Contacts with Flemish organizations that participate in this show that European cooperation is innovative and stimulating; the impact of such a European project is great, both on course participants / adult learners and teachers / training workers / board members, as well as on their own organization.

Hypatia Foundation organized two consecutive communication events in March 2020 to promote the work accomplished in the SENCIT project funded under ERAMSMUS+ programme. The events where held at the Nicosia Municipal Multifunctional Foundation that coincided along with awareness building campaign to prevent and handle sexual harassment incidents for migrant women. The events highlighted practical suggestions and good practice on empowering migrant and refugee women.
